About Our School
"where every child
really matters"
Hawthorn is a small school in the West End of Newcastle upon Tyne. We have one class per year group, from reception to year 6, and an Additionally Resourced Provision (ARP) for up to 8 children with Social, Emotional or Mental Health Difficulties.
Our building is quirky and can be hard to find tucked off Elswick Road but we pride ourselves on its warm, welcoming atmosphere and the excellent relationships we have established with our families and the other professionals we work with. We work hard to include parents in their child's education by providing workshops and lots of opportunities for parents to join us in school.
We believe in Inclusion in all its forms; we welcome children into our ARP who have struggled in other settings and provide excellent support for children with a huge variety of Special Educational Needs. Our population is very mixed which gives our school a rich and tolerant profile; we have been delighted to welcome families from all round the world, often supporting them as they start a new life in the UK.
We have beautiful grounds, including a Multi Games Area, a wild wood, which we have developed as our Forest School, and an orchard. We are very proud of our Edible Playground space with planting beds for all classes and an outdoor performance area. We also have a Gazebo that can be used for outdoor learning as well as outdoor gym equipment on our meadow. Our school has been described as an “oasis”. We aim to make every child's school day exciting and rewarding so that they look forward to each new school day. Our dedicated staff work hard to give our children new experiences, prepare them for secondary school and give them a desire for learning that will last them their whole life.

Since 2012 we have been working with the Sage Gateshead and the Royal Northern Sinfonia Orchestra on the In Harmony programme. We are one of only 6 schools in the country where every child is taught a musical instrument and has music lessons every day. We have discovered some real talent and are very proud of the Hawthorn Primary Symphony Orchestra made up of around 60 children.
In 2015 we joined with 6 local schools to form the West End Schools’ Trust. This enables us to work very closely together for our mutual benefit.
