RE at Hawthorn

In our multicultural society, religious education is a vitally important element of our children’s education. It locates children in our society and enables them to relate to the traditions and beliefs of others, while developing their religious literacy and discernment, as well as their own belief system. At Hawthorn, our RE curriculum is designed to give children an understanding of one and another and learn about how others live in our world. By doing this, it helps our children find and take their places as aspirational individuals within a diverse multi-religious and multi-secular society, which we find ourselves living in today.

The children in Year 3 had the most amazing visit to the Gurdwara. Jaswinder showed us around and the children had the opportunity to share their knowledge too. They saw where the Guru Granth Sahib is kept and listened to the music which they use to meditate. The children ate in the Langar which is very important in the Sikh faith.

Year 4 took part in a Diwali themed workshop, delivered by Gem Arts and created designs for the festival of lights. They then visited a Hindu temple in October to showcase the artwork they created during the workshop.

Year 4 enjoyed a trip to the local Hindu temple to support their learning in the classroom. They had a fantastic time finding out what happens during their prayer time. The children met the priest and observed their morning prayer session as well as finding out about the different areas of the temple. They were also able to showcase their artwork for the festival of lights which they created in school.

In Year 2, the children have been learning about why the Torah is special to Jewish people. After looking at a Torah scroll, they created their own scrolls and added their own special rules which they think are important. They then shared these with the rest of the class.
