Oracy at Hawthorn

At Hawthorn Primary School, we use Oracy tecniques throughout our curriculum in order to enhance learning and support our pupils in being the best they can be. As a Voice 21 school, we are proud of our pupils' use of debate, discussion and presentation and we are always keen to share our abilities with new audience.

Teachers use the Voice 21 Framework to help structure our learning and to make sure children make progress. Each year group focusses on different areas of the Framework and we build on skills as they move through school.

Classes also use talk tactics in class discussion in order to take part in different types of talking. Children are taught to use different sentence stems that become more complex as they move through school. Staff have also divised our own stem sentences for some subjects to make sure that children talk technically in school.

We have reminders about our class Oracy targets in our classroom and these help to focus children on what they should be aiming to achieve. Classroom resources are readily avaliable to help all children when taking part in classroom discussions, and we use grouping in different ways to help expand children's experiences and to ensure that they talk and listen to a range of people. Our talk assemblies have also helped us to begin discussions more regularly with different your groups.

We love to celebrate our achievements in Oracy, and our star of the week celebrations, parents workshops and WEST trust events, such as the annual debating competition, help us to show off what we can do.

Children also use their Oracy skills to help support our school in developing the experiences children have here. School Council and Eco-council use Oracy techniques reguarly to debate, discuss and present. They talk to other trust schools regularly and are often asked to share ideas and projects with external vistors and governors.
