Hawthorn is an inclusive one-form entry primary school in the West End of Newcastle, with pupils from Reception to Year 6. We have beautiful grounds, including a Multi-Use Games Area, a wild wood, which we have developed as our Forest School, and an orchard. We are very proud of our Edible Playground space with planting beds for all classes and an outdoor performance area. Our school has been described as an “oasis” and we are very proud to work closely with our local community. We aim to make every child's school day exciting and rewarding so that they look forward to each new day as part of our Hawthorn family. Our dedicated staff work hard to give our children new experiences, prepare them for secondary school and give them a desire for learning that will last their whole life.

Our children are happy and enthusiastic about coming to school, with excellent behaviours and attitudes towards learning. We are seeking to recruit outstanding, enthusiastic and creative teaching assistants, who have knowledge of a range of strategies to support children with SEND. The successful candidates will be flexible, as the children’s needs can change throughout the year. We can offer you the opportunity to work in a stimulating environment working with a dedicated team of staff with opportunities to continue your own professional development.

It is essential that applicants:

  • Hold Literacy and Numeracy skills, the equivalent of NVQ Level 3;
  • Have experience of delivering one to one support and small group interventions;
  • Have experience of supporting children with SEND, particularly children with Autism, ADHD, social communication and speech and language needs;
  • Are able to work closely with class teachers to deliver appropriate activities and also use their own initiative to help children meet their targets.

Ideally, candidates should have experience of:

  • Working in areas away from the mainstream classroom to support children with regulation strategies;
  • Supporting children with their intimate and personal care;
  • Non-verbal communication strategies, i.e. PECS/Makaton.

Hawthorn Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The appointment of the successful applicants will depend upon receipt of an Enhanced Certificate of Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service and a range of other recruitment checks.

Please note that in all cases written references will be taken up and made available to interviewers BEFORE the final selection stage; even if you indicate otherwise.

Applications returned by email will not be considered. Please return all completed applications by post with sufficient postage paid, or deliver in person to the School Office. We would strongly encourage candidates to come on a pre-application visit to the school. Visits are available on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th April at 2pm, 3pm and 4pm. Please contact the school office on 0191 2734237 if you wish to book a visit.
