A warm welcome to our Year 5 page. If your child is in Year 5 please familiarise yourself with this page as it will let you know the various activities the class is currently involved in.
We have some amazing topics this year, such as Space, The Mayans and WW1 and I am sure your child will enjoy sharing their learning with you at home. We teach through a topic-based curriculum to ensure that learning is exciting and engaging for your child. Please check our topic webs to find out what we will be learning each term.
There will be many opportunities across the year to visit our class. During these times you will be able to participate in fun activities with your child, look at your child’s books and have a chat with me and Mrs Spencer (Teaching Assistant).

The School Day
The school day starts at 8.50 am and finishes at 3.30 pm.
Start of the Day:
Year 5 children need to go straight to class when the school gates open. Mrs Lawrence and Mrs Spencer will be in the classroom ready for the children coming into class. The children have then morning work to complete as soon as they come into class.
End of the Day:
The school day finishes at 3.30 pm for Year 5. The teachers bring the class outside of the classroom parents/carers. Children who are not collected on time will be taken to the School Office to wait for you. If you would like your child to walk home on their own you must collect a letter from the office in order to give permission for your child to do this.
Year 5 has PE on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
We will also continue our swimming lessons this term on a Wednesday afternoon.
The children are expected to have the school PE kit including trainers for each session. Long hair must be tied back on PE days.
If your child forgets their swimming costume, they will wear a spare kit from school.
Homework tasks alternate each week. Homework is given out each Friday and is due back the following Tuesday.
Spellings are given on Monday to practice ready for a test on a Friday.
If your child is struggling with their homework please ensure they speak to their teacher on a Monday morning.
Please ensure your child is practising times tables daily using Times Tables.
Year 5 children are expected to read each evening either independently or with an adult and should write their own comment in their reading record (where possible).
Please see our English page on this website for recommended books for Year 5.
Reporting to Parents:
In the autumn and spring terms, we have Parent Evenings. However, if you have any concerns or questions about anything to do with your child, please don’t wait for a formal meeting, but contact me right away.
We want parents to feel welcome in our class and school.
You will be given a Year 5 Newsletter and Topic Web at the beginning of every term so that you can see what your child will be learning. Please also check the Year 5 page of the school website for information or our Twitter feed.
Children will have an opportunity once every half term to take part in ‘Forest School’ which is used by the whole school, where children learn a host of cross-curricular subjects all year round.
After School Clubs:
Children are encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities at school. At the start of each term, we'll send you details of the clubs that are available for Year 5. Please ensure that the letters are returned as soon as possible in order to book your child a place.
